Last view of the front door of our Belmont house

Thursday Doors: August 18, 2016

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. I started participating last week. For more doors, or to join in, check out Norm 2.0’s weekly post.

This is the last picture I took before leaving our house in Belmont Massachusetts last year. It was the night before we got on the plane to California to begin our lives here. We stayed in an airport hotel. The house was empty: all the furniture (including the beds) was on a truck.

We bought this house when we were expecting our son in 2003 because we needed more space. We lived in it for 12 years and 3 months. It was the only house our son knew, until last year. It was a colonial built in 1929, one of many on the suburban street.

I posted the picture to Instagram and Facebook on July 24, 2015, with the caption, “good night.”

I’ve been thinking about the move on the occasion of its 1-year anniversary. I definitely feel more settled here now, and I like the weather and the landscapes better in CA. But I loved a lot about our old house, and was sad to say goodbye.

  1. A door with memories. We lived in our first house for 27 years, from being one year married to having one daughter out on her own and one in college. I loved our house, but never went back once we sold it. A friend said she would take a photo to send to me, but I declined. I want to remember it the way it was when it was our home.

  2. Leaving a home you love is hard. We lived in the same house for 10 years, having it built when we first married. All of our children were born there and it is in the town where I was born and raised.
My friend still lives on the same street so I pass it when I return. It has always looked the same when I return…until this year. They replaced the front door and changed the color of the roof shingles.
It’s great that you are feeling settled. We just hit our 3 year mark here and I am finally beginning to find my place 🙂 -Amy

    1. I visited this house in June. The new owners are doing a lot of work on it. The backyard was completely trashed and there was a porta potty next in the driveway. They were building an addition and completely redoing the kitchen. That made me a little sad because one of the things that I preferred in our old house to our new was the kitchen. It’s true our old kitchen wasn’t in the modern style: it had light colored wood cabinets and white appliances. But I really liked that style. The windows were small and the kitchen was in the back and the yard was shady so there wasn’t a lot of natural light, and the light interior made things more cheerful. Our new kitchen has dark cherry cabinets and stainless steel appliances. It’s more the fashion but I think it’s a bit too dark and institutional. I don’t dislike it enough to spend the money to redo it, but I liked the old one better. And now the old one is no more 😦

      1. There was definitely a sadness to the changes I saw. Luckily, I have no clue what they’ve done inside. We poured a lot of ourselves into that home. There is cherry and stainless in our current home. Must be the fashion of the time. And while stainless is beautiful, it’s much too hard to keep clean!
