Thursday Doors: Sunnyvale Fish

My 17-year-old daughter got her learner’s permit a few weeks ago. I had avoided thinking about it until absolutely necessary, but there’s quite a bit of parental teaching expected in CA: 50 hours of driving experience before she can take the drivers’ license test. This phase of my own teenage life was hard on my parents (and on their car repair budget), so I need to take it seriously now.

So far she has driven around town to some appointments and yesterday we drove to church. The UU Fellowship of Sunnyvale is less than a mile from our home, if we were birds. However, the highway 85 is right in the way, and we have to go around it.

So far I’ve been pleased with the results. The church parking lot was completely empty on a Wednesday afternoon, and so she could practice parking the car centered between the lines and not hitting the concrete barrier at the front. A line of these parking spaces bordered on a building with doors that we had not looked at carefully before:

These doors open onto the Sunnyvale Fish Closet. This is a charitable organization that helps out families in need with food, clothing, and basic necessities, sponsored and staffed by more than 20 local churches. The clothes closet is open and accepts donations every Tuesday morning from 9 to 11 am. Look for the doors with the fish!

  1. Greetings from a fellow UU. I go to Morristown Unitarian Fellowship in New Jersey. You may have met my wonderful minister Alison who is running for UUA president. We will miss her if she wins, but she will get things done! I love your door photos.

  2. Back when I & my 4 siblings were kids (now we’re Old Goats….) my Dad first taught us to drive the old 1934 Case 4-cylinder Tractor (“Charlie 4-Banger”). We had 11 acres of open field to putt around in… after he felt we were good to go with Charlie, we graduated to a 1965 Opel Kadett station wagon. On the same 11 acres. When we got to drive in a parking lot, it was like navigating on a postage stamp!!

  3. My son got his license a few months back. The process is nerve-wracking! But it makes life so much simpler afterwards, when the child can take themselves off to their music lessons or whatever.

One of the first times he and I went out to practice, we went to the parking lot of the preschool that both kids went to more than a decade ago. We were happily driving around, practicing manoeuvres and parking, until after 6:00 p.m. And then when we went to leave, we found that the parking gates (out of view of the part of the lot we were in) had been locked shut, and all of the preschool employees had gone home for the weekend….

  4. My almost 17-year old officially got her license at the end of December. In PA you can get your permit when you turn 16. It was nerve-wracking, that parent led trial and error period, but it allowed many opportunities to observe how she drove in all kinds of weather and now, a couple months later, I’m pretty confident in her driving abilities. Of course, nothing makes up for experience so I’ll be more confident in say, ten years!
